Avoiding Skin Irritation Due to Mask: 5 Tips

These days we are getting used to wearing protective masks over our faces, often for many hours.

One of the physical side effects of COVID is skin irritation due to prolonged daily use of the face mask. Whatever the type of face mask, from surgical to fabric, FFP2, FFP3 with valve or not, can lead to various problems on the facial skin.

Issues range from dryness toirritation and even allergic reactions. Even pre-existing conditions such as acne, dermatitis and rosacea can worsen with mask use.

However, with these 5 simple tips you can take care of your skin and help prevent skin irritation caused by mask use.

Tip 1: Use the correct facial cleanser

Facial skin is more delicate than other parts of the body, which is why it requires special care. Use gentle cleansers for daily hygiene and avoid harsh products. Dermatologists recommend using gentle facial cleansers such as Bioderm Dermolatte.

Tip 2: Don’t use (too much) make-up

The presence of oils in make-up can accelerate skin problems. Use non-comedogenic makeup and, if possible, limit the use of foundation under your face mask. A little pencil and mascara to brighten your eyes and a dab of chapstick are all you need to express your femininity to the fullest.

Tip 3: Hydrate and protect your skin throughout the day

If the irritation is on the bridge of the nose it could be from the adhesive strip found on some masks. If it is behind the ears it could be the ties. A moisturizer applied every two hours is the best way to avoid rubbing against the tissue. The best products are Bioderm Barrier Paste (which adds a protective layer of zinc to the skin) and Bioderm Dermocrema (for very dry, scaly skin).

Tip 4: Repair damaged skin overnight

During the night, your skin can finally regenerate. Therefore, it is very important to apply a nourishing cream before going to bed. It is good to opt for nonaggressive products that are rich in antioxidants and specific substances that soothe irritation, such as Bioderm vitamin E complex oil.

Tip 5: If necessary, see a dermatologist

Especially in cases of contact dermatitis, it is important to see a dermatologist to avoid worsening caused by constant use of the mask. Treatment can include specific soothing creams and possibly a cortisone-based cream.Discover our range of high-quality skin careproducts that will help you avoid skin irritation from mask use.
